Hands gathered around a young tree

About

We are here.

We exist to equip and train nonprofit leaders to be empowered beyond the passion.

Why

Empowering beyond the passion.

There is an effective diligence required to have a successful organization. Many nonprofit leaders overflow with passion and keep a razor-sharp vision, but they need help finding traction. We meet that need with training, coaching, networking, and the business acumen every organization requires.

Leadership

The people who keep the Exchange.

An executive director who walks with the members, and a president who still sits in the coaching room.

Brad Hays

President

Brad Hays

The long view — faith, work, and a leader who does not have to walk it alone.

Brad Hays is president of The Leadership Exchange and a coach who spent four decades in business before giving that experience away. He sits with leaders from the chief’s office to the front line, through the lenses of faith, life, and work. His purpose is plain: apply God’s transforming word in the workplace.

The acumen was formed at Pennzoil Products Company and AlliedSignal, in a strategic consulting firm, and in three privately funded start-ups. That path led him to found Leaven Exchange, a practice in leadership development and executive coaching, and later to chair and serve the Exchange. He has also served The Gathering of Men Houston, Convene as Houston area chair, the Center for Christianity in Business at Houston Baptist University, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeast Texas.

A fourth-generation Texan, Brad lives the rest of the week with his wife, Eileen, their family — including fourteen grandchildren — and Houston’s Second Baptist Church, where he sings and teaches. At the Exchange he keeps the room rooted: passion to start the work, diligence to keep it.

Bob Atkins

Executive Director

Bob Atkins

Encourage the leader, invest in the next one, and keep the calling rooted.

Bob Atkins is executive director of The Leadership Exchange. He has spent more than thirty-five years in ministry and nonprofit leadership — developing people, casting vision, and helping organizations leave a lasting Kingdom mark. He walks with Christian nonprofit leaders so they can flourish in faith, life, and leadership while they serve others.

His approach is shaped by Barnabas and Paul, and by the call of 2 Timothy 2:2: encourage others, invest in leaders, and equip them to do the same for the next generation. He especially enjoys helping people discover generous, strategic giving — how resources can produce a return on what he calls an eternal portfolio. That same investment in people reaches globally, through disciple makers and church planters in India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.

At the Exchange he considers it a privilege to sit beside the people who already spend their lives on the mission. He and his wife, Lynne, have two sons, a daughter-in-law, and three grandsons. When the week is his, he reads, fly-fishes, and keeps time with family.

How

Three phases of engagement

  1. 1. Coach-led group exchange

Training and exercise that challenges members to grow and apply new techniques to their organizations.

  2. 2. Peer-to-peer exchange

Members present specific challenges and hear from fellow nonprofit leaders who have faced similar ground.

  3. 3. One-on-one coaching

Once a month, each member meets with their coach on specific growth goals and receives personalized training.

What

Equip leaders

  • Providing best practices and tools all organizations need.
  • Establishing sound business practices that apply to all organizations — nonprofit or otherwise.
  • Applying the secrets of business.
  • Bringing the best practices of for-profit business to nonprofit organizations.

Leadership

Servant leadership is not weak leadership. Executives learn practical skills to inspire a team and grow an organization.

Team engagement

Best-practice team building grows trust, commitment, and accountability. Nobody should have to do this work alone.

Time

There is only so much time. We help members become more efficient without losing the work that matters.

Finances

Build a budget you can actually run — and be ready for what gets thrown at you.

People

Recruit for the right role, train well, and keep the people who make the mission possible.

Data

Measure what matters. Learn which metrics help a leader decide, not just report.

Process

Sound processes let an organization grow without depending on one heroic person.

Communication

The cornerstone of team management. Practice the conversations that hold a staff and a board together.
